Mental Well Being

How does free time play a role in our happiness?

Each of us must have thought once in our life, how can I improve my life? What are the tricks that help maintain mental health? What can I do with my free time so that it is high-quality and useful for myself?

Starting this journey can feel difficult and full of challenges, but you are on the right track because you found this blog and you have taken the first step towards more quality time.

Why is vacation necessary?

We are all used to working hard to achieve our goals. But often people do not know how to rest properly or forget to rest at all, perhaps because of this life becomes unbalanced and everyday activities become tedious.

During vacation, a person restores his energy, your body and mind calm down, and the stress level decreases. It’s the same with your ” social battery” – if you’re surrounded by other people all the time, you communicate a lot, then when you get home you feel so empty that you can’t even prepare dinner for yourself or take off your makeup. So you have to take care of yourself first, not others, and don’t forget to give yourself enough free time.

Harmful activities on vacation

Every medal has two sides, so does vacation, and one of them is harmful. What exactly do I mean by that?

Let’s say you have a free Friday night and you would like to use your free time in a quality way – you write to your girlfriends and go to a club or a party. On the one hand, it is good that you go out with your girlfriends, you can develop your social skills and make acquaintances, but on the other hand, you are ruining your health.

A certain party includes alcohol, quite a lot of fast food and other things. You come home late or in the morning and it turns out that you didn’t get to rest because your brain was working all night. And certainly in the morning you have a headache, malaise and a hangover.

But there are other things that can ruin your vacation. For example, watching serials/movies all day. Yes, you can feel what is harmful about it? But in reality, maybe the whole day you lie in your bed or sit on the couch instead of moving. You eat a lot of chips or popcorn, drink soft drinks. After that, you discover that it’s already 2:30 in the morning and you should go to sleep, but you can’t, because you can’t sleep. And all night you surf the net or continue watching the series. This is also where insufficient sleep or, on the contrary, excessive sleep comes from. However, the consequence is that your body cannot recover and a complete error occurs in the brain . At this moment you absolutely do not understand who and where you are. In fact, all these activities are completely normal and necessary, but extremes are also not useful, and balance must be found in everything.

Terve Elu Keskus has said that 16-24-year-olds use the Internet most actively, and 96% of them do so several times a day. For example, looking at a screen before going to bed can worsen the quality of your sleep. This, in turn, affects your general health and well-being.

Important activities

You must have heard that you need to move a lot in the fresh air. But you know, it’s true, it’s this activity that helps me in difficult times. During the walk you have several options, for example you can listen to music and enjoy the weather or be in your thoughts and analyze the things happening in life. But why not just sit in the park and think about the beauty of nature and be grateful for your life? You can also do a little jogging, everything is in your hands. During this time, negative thoughts go away for a while and you feel happy.  The Health Fund has written a good and comprehensive article about the necessity of exercise.

In addition to exercise, you can always engage in your hobbies, which will improve your mood. For example, I personally like to paint by numbers and listen to various audio books. It helps to focus and be in the moment, not in tomorrow’s university activities or somewhere else.

Another idea that I have recently heard from my acquaintance – explore different places in your city. You may think that “well, what have I not seen in Tallinn, I have lived here all my life”. But I believe that there is at least one place inside the city that you haven’t been to yet. It is a good opportunity to get new emotions and who knows, maybe this will become your new favorite place? It doesn’t matter if it’s a small cafe, a beautiful park or why not an abandoned building? If you yourself feel that this is the right place, why not?

What is the long-term impact of quality time spent

If a person rests constantly and with high quality, he has a lot of energy and resources. It is much easier for a rested person to receive new information and be productive in every aspect of life. In the same way, it can be noticed that relationships with other people are also changing. You may also make new acquaintances or hobbies that cause only positive emotions. You start to notice a lot more positive things and less negative ones. Pays no attention to small meaningless things or gossip. You appreciate the people around you more, you care about them, and they do the same

In conclusion, I will tell you that next time just go outside and think about what you can do usefully today. We all start somewhere and make mistakes, but the most important thing is that you have the desire to change something. Don’t be afraid to try new things and step out of your comfort zone . Take time for yourself and your dreams and trust that you can change your life for the better. It is in your power to create your own happiness, and every day is an opportunity to take a step closer to who you really want to be. It is at this moment that you take your second step.
